Prophecy

The Apostle Paul lists prophecy as a manifestation of the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthains 12. To prophecy means to speak on behalf of God – to share a word from God with another person or group of people. The bible is full of stories of people prophesying, and many books in the Bible are named after prophets – books like Isaiah, Micah, Amos, Jeremiah, Jonah and more.

In the book of Acts, after the Holy Spirit was poured out on Jesus’s disciples on the day of Pentecost, the Apostle Peter quoted from the prophet Joel, who said this:

And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,
That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind;
And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,’

The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthians, encourages every Christian to pursue prophecy, writing: “Pursue love and be eager for the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For… the one who prophesies speaks to men for edification (building someone up) and exhortation and encouragement (some translations say consolation).”(parenthesis added).
