In 1 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul lists discernment or “discerning of spirits” as one of the manifestations of the Holy Spirit.
This seems to be about the ability to discern between truth and falsehoods or to distinguish between the holy spirit working vs. other spirits/ evil spirits at work. It also may refer to the clear-headed ability to distinguish between people who are operating in good faith and those that are not.
